2008 Corvette Overview
The 2008 Corvette takes another step forward as the base models receive a new power plant: the LS3. The engineers at Chevy refined the already impressive LS2 motor by redesigning the cylinder heads to allow for a smoother airflow on the intake and exhaust runner and valves. This change plus a new intake manifold added 30 HP and 24 ft./lbs of torque, producing 430 HP overall and 424 ft./lbs of torque. And if that wasn't enough, a new exhaust system was available on the 2008 Corvettes, similar to the exhaust found on the Z06 Corvettes. This system quiets the exhaust when the engine is not under load, by slightly restricting flow during steady or low throttle. During peak demand, however, the 2008 Corvette responds to the increased loads by triggering the vacuum actuator to open a flap to tap an extra 6 HP and 4 ft./lbs of torque.
Other upgrades to the base model Corvette are On-Star, XM radio and Automatic dimming rear view mirrors with compass. There were also two color substitutions: Jetstream Blue Metallic Tintcoat and Crystal Red Metallic Tintcoat replaced Le Mans Blue Metallic and Monterey Red Metallic Tintcoat. New this year are the redesigned split 5 spoke rims; there were also the addition of some metal finish products on the door sills. From the outside, however, the Corvette retains its classic lines and appeal.
