Greg sent us this picture of his incredibly rare 87 dark orange metallic C4 convertible. How rare, you ask? According to Greg (and verified by factory data), of the 31,000 Corvettes made that year, only 87 of them were this dark orange metallic color. Even more incredible - only 35 of those were convertibles. If you do that math, that's around 1/10th of 1 percent that were made in that year. Rare might not even be the right word for this car!
Perhaps even more priceless than the car is the story of how it came to Greg. It seems like he and his wife might have a small shared obsession with Corvettes .... which led them to this amazing find. He writes:
"...Well my wife and I had talked about buying a Corvette for years but the timing just wasn't right. Well one day while I was going to work I ran across a 1989 Metallic Red Corvette at a fair price and called my wife about it. We went and checked it out and bought it.
Now a couple of months go by and the two of us were out running some errands when we stopped for lunch and while we were sitting there my wife said to me 'Do you see that?'. Across the street all you could see was the nose of the car sticking out and being big fans of Corvette's we both knew it was a C-4. When we were finished with lunch we drove across the street and we just couldn't believe what we were seeing. I went over the car with a fine tooth comb, priced it at Kelly Blue Book's website and made them an offer. As we were signing the papers I told them what they really had. They had no idea it was a very rare car. Only 87 cars were painted this copper color in 1987 (out of 31,000 cars made that year) and out of those only 35 were convertibles.
The previous owner had the side pipes installed. I have spoken with the maker of the side pipes and they said that even though they have the patent on the side pipes with the age of the C-4's they wouldn't be making anymore of them. The milage was only 36,000 on a twenty year old car. I have upraded the ECM and that is pretty much it. I also added a wood grain dash kit. I know wood grain isn't the most politically corect for a Corvette but with the color of the paint and saddle color interior it goes very well. I want to keep it as original as possible.
Now as the months go by, I can tell my wife is not happy about something and I finally got her to tell me what it was. She say's to me, 'We got the red one and now we have the copper one - but I want a blue one'. So now here we go again. We just bought a 1994 Admiral Blue and said good-bye to the 1989."
Well, if you have red, you must have blue - just be careful, pretty soon you're going to have a white one and then you'll have all your bases covered, Greg! (And we'll volunteer to drive it for you, of course, since you'll need an extra set of hands.)
Thanks again for the great narrative and the picture of this incredibly rare Corvette for everyone to enjoy.
