1989 Corvette Overview
The biggest change to the ’89 Corvette was the new 6-speed manual transmission that also was the only Corvette to get the new Selective Ride and Handling System that offered three driving modes; Touring, Sport and Performance. This option replaced the Z52 performance handling package. Also offered this year was a removable hardtop for the convertibles, a first since 1975.
Chevy also began looking to the future with beginning to develop the next stage of the Corvette, the C5 which was delayed until 1998. Fortunately, Chevy was able to release a limited number of 84 ZR-1 Corvettes as a test run for the next production year.
